[January 2022] For the first week of the new year, Zoë and I flew to southern Pategonia (Puerto Arenas) and then on by bus to Puerto Natales, so as to access the ‘W Hike’ in Torres del Paine, the most well known National Park in Chile. It was a beautiful 5 day trek through the highlights of the park. Some of the days were a little longer than we are used to (a bit over 20kms), but each day ended in a campground with showers, which made things easier.
Inside our tent.
Grey Glacier behind us.
Viewpoint for grey glacier.
Mirador Britannica. Fantastic 360 views from the middle of Francis Valley.
Horse riding at Pingo Salvaje – a beautiful ranch.
The ‘Torres of the park’.
Kayaking near Grey Glacier.
Francis Valley
The Last Hope – supposedly the worlds southern most distillery in Puerto Natalaes, run by a couple of Australian guys.
1000 CLP note.
4am wake up to get to the Torres del Paine lookout and still make our 2pm bus. It was pouring when we got out of the tent, but quickly got better.
Wind protection at Paine del Grande campsite.
We carried battery packs, but did not need to – there were power outlets at all campsites.
Nutella and burrito wraps, breakfast of champions!
The wind was often incredibly strong (below). Apparently this is common in summer because of the large temperature differences between the glaciers and the surroundings.
